Why Hilaire Belloc Still Matters

As with many writers who write a lot, his output was a mixed bag. Undoubtedly, too, he holds no interest for those who imagine European history and European culture began in 1789 with the French Revolution. But for people with an appreciation of Europe's Christian roots, he matters. Readers who wish to tackle Belloc a little at a time will find a helpful introduction in The Essential Belloc, a St. Benedict's Press compilation edited by Fr. C.J. McCloskey, Scott Bloch, and Brian Robertson.

One of my favorite old quotes is not from Belloc himself but from an author writing about Belloc in a biography. The name of both book and author escape me right now but I remember the author mentioning that Belloc would frequently ask children to pray for him, adding, "Blessed are those for whom children pray."

Indeed.

VA GOP May Strip McAuliffe Of His Protective Detail Over Concealed Carry

Virginia’s radically anti-gun Governor and Attorney General were probably quite pleased with themselves when they spitefully severed concealed carry agreements with 25 states, including all but one of its neighbors.

“A lot of the governor’s power is deferred to the General Assembly at that point and I’ll be getting with my collegues to circumvent everything this governor has done on this point,” he said. “I have a budget amendment that I’m looking at to take away his executive protection unit. If he’s so afraid of guns, then I’m not going to surround him with armed state policemen.”

History never really declares verdicts, it seems to skip right to the sentencing without ever really explicating the verdict or even specifying the crimes or the accused. It's what makes learning from history so much more difficult than simply learning history itself.
